Definition of Law

Law is best defined as a collection of rules enforced by social or governmental institutions that govern behavior and ensure order in society.

At its foundation, law aims to achieve justice, safeguard individual rights, and foster social harmony. For example, in the United States alone, there are over 20,000 laws at the federal level, plus many more at the state and local levels, all of which influence how individuals conduct their lives. These laws range from regulations, such as traffic laws, to protections, like anti-discrimination statutes.

The definition of law is closely tied to morality and its capacity to adapt to societal changes. For instance, the legalization of same-sex marriage in many countries illustrates how laws can evolve in response to evolving social norms.
